Jonglei youth band together for peace

17 August 2012 - Bringing Jonglei State youth together to further peace and development, a three-day conference concluded today in the capital Bor.

The over 55 youth attending formed the "Jonglei Youth Union" during the conference in an effort to work together in achieving youth development.

In closing remarks, State Governor Kuol Manyang Juuk said, "I urge you to (forge a) bond that cannot be broken easily. As youth of the nation, the future depends on you and you should be united."

The high illiteracy rate, unemployment, and lack of technical skills as well as sporting facilities were challenges undermining youth development in the state, participants said.

Retaliatory armed attacks broke out between the Bor Dinka, Lou Nuer and Murle communities in December 2011 and early 2012, leaving hundreds dead or injured and displacing thousands.

Commenting on the conference, participant Akech Koul Akech said, "This conference is ... very important because it brings together all youth of Jonglei, regardless of ethnicity."

Tabitha Nyawang said it had broken barriers leading to inter-communal violence in Jonglei. "I think this kind of conference is helpful for us ... to come together for common purposes."

The conference also aimed to develop a strategy for youth development, identify economic opportunities they can harness and end negative cultural practices like cattle rustling.

Organized by the Jonglei State Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, UNICEF and the non-governmental organization Conflict Mitigation Stabilization Initiative, the workshop also included 22 representatives from government and civil society.
