Law enforcers learn rule of law, reduced detention in Kuajok

28 May 2014 - Aiming to promote rule of law and shorter detention times for prisoners, UNMISS concluded a two-day judiciary workshop today in the Warrap State capital Kuajok.

Organized by UNMISS Justice Advisory Section, the workshop’s 30 participants included personnel from the prisons service, police and judiciary.

Opening the activity, UNMISS State Coordinator Abraham Onifade said respect for rule of law, promotion of human rights and imposing law and order were recipes to reduce prolonged detention.

The training covered prolonged and arbitrary detention, human rights and the legal framework as well as protection of children in conflict with the law.

Tara Khan, UNMISS Justice Advisory Section Officer, said the workshop aimed to build the capacity of Warrap law enforcement sectors, so they could handle cases professionally. “It is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies in South Sudan and Kuajok in particular to ensure laws and order is implemented.”
