Malakal celebrates Day of African Child

16 June 2014 - The Day of the African Child was celebrated by children living in the protection area at UNMISS in Malakal, Upper Nile State, with songs, traditional dances and drama on early and forced marriages.

UNMISS head of Civil Affairs Adesola Abolurin, representing the mission, urged parents to send their children to school.

“Without education the children will not be empowered,” she said. “Education is the source of development. The children are the leaders of tomorrow.”

Ms. Adesola pledged that UNMISS and humanitarians actors would support displaced children. “UNMISS … will continue to support the children … by providing quality education in POC.”

UNICEF chief of field office in Malakal, Paulin Nkwosseu, called on children to maintain peace. “I call upon you to maintain peace among yourselves and do what will benefit you in the future.”
