Media peacebuilding forum held in Warrap

19 September 2012 - Focusing on the media's vital role in peacebuilding, 18 journalists from thethree radio stations in Warrap State wrapped up a two-day media forum today in the state capital Kuajok.

Under the theme "Journalism for Peace", the forum was organized by UNMISS and the state Ministry of Information and Telecommunications as well as Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

"The media are valuable to the people of Warrap State at many different levels, ranging from disseminating social messages to civic education," said Acting Governor Victor Atem Atem, urging journalists not to underrate their duty.

Working in a state where inter-communal tension often occurs, participants agreed that journalists should strive to be a part of the solution, rather than the problem, during conflict situations.

UNMISS State Coordinator Fergus Boyle highlighted the need for networking among journalists in different counties.
