The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in collaboration with the South Sudan National Police Service has launched a renovation project of the Warrap County Police station, valued at 45,783 USD.

“Without proper facilities, it is very difficult for the police to maintain security, and without support from the communities, the police cannot operate peacefully,” said Akol Mabior, chairperson for County Development Committee, commending UNMISS’s support, while calling on the communities to cooperate with the police service in the area.

The project, implemented by the Organization for Children Harmony (TOCH), under UNMISS’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPS), aims at improving the functioning of the rule of law and the security situation in the areas of Warrap County, Tonj North, and its environs, with an estimated population of over 160,000.

Women’s representative, Mama Adut, expressed her gratitude to UNMISS for renovating the Warrap County police station, the first time since it was built during the colonial rule.

“We are all aware that the UNMISS mandate is the protection of civilians, and to bring peace to us in South Sudan but now UNMISS is supporting us with this renovation of our police station which is out of their mandate,” Adut stated.

Maj. Aken Deng Adup, County Police inspector thanked UNMISS for approving the renovation of Warrap Police Station.

“It is the work of the government to renovate this facility but with the help of South Sudan’s peace partner, the police station will now be renovated,” he said.

Acting Head of UNMISS Kuajok Field Office, Abimbola Aina, outlined the mandate of UNMISS and the objectives of the QIPs. She said the renovation of Warrap County Police station will help reduce extrajudicial killings in the communities.

“Violence is very destructive in the communities and people must change their attitude, it is the work of all of us to pass this message to the communities,” said Abimbola.

“The renovation of this facility will take three months to finish, so it is your responsibility as communities to monitor the renovation processes of the police station.”

About fifty representatives from the local authorities, the police, community-based organizations, the county development committee, youth, and women representatives, attended the event.
