Preparing for the planned disarmament campaign in Warrap State, South Sudan, UNMISS facilitated a dialogue forum for military and civilian community members that focused on the protection of children in conflict settings.

To improve safety and help expand South Sudan's international airport, UNMISS rehabilitated and returned land occupied by the peacekeeping mission to civil aviation authorities in a mammoth, costly effort that required moving 300 shipping containers, relocating accommodation units, levelling and compacting land, building culverts and clearing drainage systems.

Violent clashes between armed forces have led to more than 16,000 civilians being displaced in Western Bahr El Ghazal. To better understand the conditions, protection and other needs of the persons having fled their homes, UNMISS accompanied a State Committee on an assessment mission.

In their search for safety, returnees as well as refugees fleeing the Sudan crisis face a variety of challenges during their journey through South Sudan. At Bulukat in Malakal, joint efforts by UNHCR, IOM and UNMISS have led to a transit center providing short-term relief to hundreds of people passing through each week.

UNMAS is clearing another contaminated piece of land in Malakal from explosives. Once cleared, the more than 19 million square meters will serve as a new residential and farming ground for successful applicants.

At the UN Protection Site in Malakal, residents have turned challenges into opportunities. Bustling markets and community spaces have replaced previously bare ground.
