Peace forum restores trust and confidence between Unity and Ruweng Administrative Area
UNITY/RUWENG – To help end the brutal cycle of violence between neighboring communities, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) organized a peace forum with talks taking place in Pariang and Bentiu to address long-standing grievances and build trust.
Previously a single state, Unity and Ruweng Administrative Area were separated in 2020. Violence has plagued the cross-border communities since that time, with persistent killings, abductions, cattle raiding and revenge attacks.
However, the two State governments and other key stakeholders have demonstrated their strong desire for change by attending the peace forum and agreeing to implement a series of resolutions, including forming a joint security forces and dedicated court to handle issues, such as cattle raiding and compensation according to customary laws. They also agreed to open humanitarian corridors and facilitate the free movement of people and trade between the two areas.
“Communities in Bentiu and Pariang have coexisted as one family. We will not be divided by politics. The citizens of Ruweng will uphold today’s agreements,” asserted Simon Malual Minyiel, Paramount Chief of the Ruweng Administrative Area.
UNMISS is focused on helping the governments and communities confront their challenges and live together peacefully, so that recovery and development can take place.
“In pursuit of lasting peace, UNMISS is supporting these efforts in the quest for stability. Both governments must work together to resolve the issues impacting their citizens,” emphasized Ms. Stella Abayomi, the Acting Head of UNMISS Bentiu Field Office.
“We must not let the events of the past undermine our statehood. We are here to initiate a transformative chapter that will reunite our communities,” stated Tiob Monyluak De-Ran, Chief Administrator of the Ruweng Administrative Area.
The Governor of Unity State, Riek Bim Top, emphasized the significance of the event in rebuilding trust.
“This exchange between the Chief Administrator and myself is more than just a positive gesture; it signifies that we are moving towards peace. It is impressive to see how quickly the agreed-upon resolutions are being implemented to restore harmony. Both sides unequivocally reject all forms of violence, and their governments are focused on addressing crucial issues, including the establishment of a formal justice system,” he stated.
UNMISS will continue to support the collaboration between the two leaders to implement these resolutions.
