Police must be good managers, says UN official

19 December 2012 - A strong police force was essential in a new country like South Sudan, but it must have good managers to be effective, a top UN official in the country said today at Rajaf Police Training School in Juba.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) was working closely with the Ministry of Interior to support managerial training at the Rajaf school, said Jordan Ryan, UNDP Director of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery.

"Good police fight corruption, are good managers and ... make life better for the people of South Sudan," Mr. Ryan said.

Accompanied by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Toby Lanzer and Minister of Interior Alison Magaya, Mr. Ryan was inspecting two UNDP- supported projects near completion – a library and policewomen's dormitory.

Minister Magaya asked UNDP to also support the training school with a water service, as the Nile River was just a few meters away from the school.

During the same visit, UNMISS Human Rights Director Richard Bennett donated five posters and 283 books on human rights topics to the school.
