Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Taban Deng Gai, First Vice-President of South Sudan

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Taban Deng Gai, First Vice-President of South Sudan. The Secretary-General expressed his profound concern with the ongoing violence and deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.

The Secretary-General acknowledged the National Dialogue and stressed the need for it to be inclusive and safe for the participation of all stakeholders.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the conviction that a political solution is the only path to peace and development in South Sudan. He further stressed the need for freedom of movement for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and humanitarian workers addressing the needs of conflict-affected civilians.
