Security improves at Bentiu protection site

10 February 2014 - Security at the civilian protection site in the UNMISS Bentiu base, Unity State, has improved since a formed police unit (FPU) was sent there in mid-January.

The 80-person strong (armed) Nepalese unit was redeployed from the UN mission in Liberia as a quick response to changing conditions in South Sudan.

“There used to be more fighting and drinking on the camp before the Nepalese started non-stop patrolling,” said Hawa Bashir, a civilian residing at the base. “Now they help manage unruly persons.”

She said the FPU also informed the camp when water ran out or people were facing other difficulties.

“One day I saw a very sick person at night,” Ms. Bashir said. “We informed the Nepalese and they knew who to call for a doctor. On another occasion a person died. They helped protecting the area where the body was laid until it was taken away.”

The FPU work alongside UN Police, but with their larger number can use a combination of mobile and stationary patrols in the protection site, intensifying the 24-hour presence.

They are often the point of contact for civilians, especially in odd hours, and assist UN Police in personal searches at the gate.

Alongside UN Police, the FPU also conduct periodic residential searches at the protection site, confiscating dangerous items and alcohol.
