Last week, the South Korean Engineering contingent in Bor opened a pastry and vegetable shop, the Hanbit Market, as part of its vocational training centre. The initiative is part of the contingent’s efforts to empower trainees by teaching them trading and customer relations skills.

The Hanbit Market will present trainees with a first-hand opportunity to practice selling produce from the vegetable farm and the bakery classes, while at the same time contributing to the economic development of the farmers and local communities.

In his remarks at the inauguration event, the ROK-HMEC commanding officer Colonel Deuk-Sang Ahn explained that the Hanbit Market will also enhance the welfare of UNMISS Bor staff members, as they are the primary target of the market. Profits made won’t go to waste either, Colonel Ahn explained:

“The proceeds from sales at the market will be ploughed back into the activities of the trainees, managed by the trainees. The market will equally give them an opportunity to learn how to manage a sustainable business.”
