South Sudan police get new leader

21 February 2013 - General Pieng Deng Kuol became South Sudan's new Inspector General of Police (IGP) today in a flag handover ceremony attended by UNMISS Deputy Police Commissioner Johannah Nkomo.

In a speech read out on his behalf by Ms. Nkomo, UNMISS Police Commissioner Fred Yiga commended outgoing IGP General Acuil Tito Madut for partnering with UN Police in laying the foundations for streamlining and professionalizing the South Sudan National Police Services through planning, targeted training and capacity building.

IGP Kuol called on all police present to understand that they were working for the people, rather than instil fear in them. He vowed to continue the transformation begun by Gen. Madut, cooperate with UN Police, listen to the voice of reason and ensure training of personnel.
