Sports for Peace and Unity tournament kicks-off in Malakal

A ‘Sports for Peace and Unity’ football competition kicked off in the Malakal PoC site under the theme; “Together for a peaceful nation.”  The activity is part of an UNMISS quick impact project to harmonize and stabilize the security situation.  The initiative is funded by the UNMISS RRP section and implemented by South Sudan Development Agency (SSUDA).

The tournament consists of seventeen football teams from various PoC site sectors in Malakal and is expected to continue throughout the current month.

The Chair of the Peace and Security Council urged the participants to continue to exert effort to combat harmful practices such an alcoholic consumption, etc… that hamper the tranquility within the camp.

“This is your role to turn down all the harmful practices through sports and other positive practices in which we could live better in tranquility within the camp” Said by the Chairman for peace and Security Council Mathew Chol Jock.

The Head of Field Office in Malakal urged the youth to continue in unity and to keep peace among themselves.

“Sports brings people together; we know that you are the future of this country , through sports we can bring all communities together as we kicks-off this unity league within our camp I wish good luck.” said Ms.Dewet.

The day was crowned by dancing and other festive activity from Kwacha cultural groups living in the PoC site.
