WESTERN EQUATORIA – The town of Tambura has been through some tough times. Rising tensions and a surge in violence earlier this year created rifts in an area that previously had a long history of peaceful co-existence among diverse communities.

Intensive efforts are underway to encourage reconciliation, peace and unity. With this in mind, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan brought youth and the wider community together for a fun-filled event to celebrate International Youth Day.

“Every day, young lives are lost to the harsh realities of economic hardship, leading them into a world of crime and violence. It's important to provide them with a secure environment so they can steer away from these kinds of dangers,” urged Capi Joseph Nafuoni, a youth representative.

The celebration, hosted by the UNMISS Yambio Field Office, included races for boys and girls, kickball through tires, blindfolded musical chairs, and a balloon tie competition.

As a women's representative, Wenepai Lina believes these kinds of activities are crucial for fostering social cohesion.

"These games hold a special significance for all of us. Not only do they bring us joy but they also have the power to help us rise above our differences."

For his part, Balanda Executive Chief, John Otto urged young people to pursue development opportunities, reduce tensions, and prevent killings, displacement, and property destruction.

During the event, over 1000 people, mostly students, ran a one-kilometer route, cheered on by locals at the market and peacekeepers at the UNMISS temporary base.

Emmanuel Dukundane, a Civil Affairs Officer in the Yambio Field Office, stressed the importance of the event given Tambura's status as one of the country's conflict hot spots.

“Including all community groups, especially the younger generations, in conflict prevention, reconciliation, and peace processes is crucial. We must strive to amplify their voices and ensure their participation in decision-making,” he said.

Closing the event, Natale Dungura, the Acting Commissioner of Tambura County, appealed to partners, UNMISS, and the wider UN family to involve youth in vocational training opportunities.

“Engaging our young people in constructive activities is not just a call to action, but also a pathway to the empowerment of our future leaders.”
