The UNMISS in Bentiu commemorated the 71st anniversary of United Nations with a flag raising ceremony, a taste of cultures event and sporting events.

The statement of UN Secretary General was delivered by UNMISS Head of Field Office, Hiroko Hirahara, during the UN flag raising ceremony.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ms. Hirahara espoused her appreciation for the work of the UN staff serving the people of South Sudan and called on them to continue their efforts for the people of the country.

“Many of our national staff have witnessed and experience suffering – hats off to their courage strength and drive to move forward, including the hard work to realize peace in their respective communities. With God, I strongly hope peace will soon prevail and the country will rise to a better future”

“We have been given an opportunity to serve the United Nations which is represented by 193 countries, including South Sudan being the newest member. Let’s keep our chin up and continue to serve the people who need our support.”

Later in the day, a taste of cultures evening was hosted by the UNMISS for the entire UN family in which traditional food from different countries was tested and traditional dances were performed.

Other activities during the celebration included sports events and a cultural show.
