UN protects several thousand civilians in Wau

20 December 2012 - Several thousand civilians, mainly women and children, are being protected by the UN, after they sought safety in the mission Wau base from violence in the city.

The civilians arrived 19 December and stayed overnight.

In response to the violence, the UN mission deployed peacekeepers and armored personnel carriers to secure the city's airport and conduct patrols in various neighborhoods and settlements.

The patrols observed a number of fires as well as groups of youths up to 300-strong armed in some instances with sticks, spears and machetes.

Security services and community leaders have been urged to use their influence and authority to restore calm in Wau and environs.
