UN Under-Secretary-General visits Unity State

8 November 2013 - A top UN official visiting Unity said today in the capital Bentiu that she was impressed by the state government’s commitment to development.

“It is very encouraging to meet with the deputy governor and all the members of the cabinet to see how committed they are to build the nation (and) … to make sure that …. institutions stand on the right foundation,” said UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support Ameerah Haq.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting Deptuy Governor Col Mabek Lang de Mading, she called on the government to build a peaceful, strong and democratic state.

Governor de Mading said he had briefed Ms. Haq on the political and security situations in the state.

“I briefed her about … issues concerning the relationship with our tri-state (area) – Warrap, Lakes and Unity states – and also issues concerning cooperation between us and United Nations, constitutional review and … forthcoming elections,” he said.

Ms. Haq and the deputy governor also attended the UNMISS Mongolian Battalion medal parade in honour of their work to support the people and authorities of Unity State.

Mongolian engineers began assisting local authorities in June when the governor requested their support with damage caused by heavy rains. Their work has included leveling and digging drainage along Bentiu’s main road, constructing dykes and draining as well as rehabilitating the public sports complex so it could host independence celebrations in July.

The second Mongolian Battalion is due to rotate next week and be replaced by the third, with a force strength of 850 men and women.
