UNESCO Undertakes Literacy Training for the South Sudan National Police Service

UNESCO, as a lead agency for education of the United Nations, supports South Sudan in all areas of education. One important intervention is the work the organization is doing to lower the Illiteracy rate in the country. In this regard, a training of literacy facilitators was organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and the Training Department of the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS). The training, held in Juba Regency Hotel on 25-29 January, was given to 15 police officers, and 15 participants recruited by the Alternative Education System (AES), who will conduct literacy classes for the police. Six of the 30 participants are women. From among the 15 police officers, one is a colonel, two with a rank of majors, eight officers, and the rest of non-commissioned officers.

The launch of the literacy classes for the police has been marked in a ceremony that will be held at the headquarters of the SSNPS at Buluk Juba, on 1 February 2016 in the presence of the Undersecretary of the MoEST, and the Inspector General of Police.
