The Chinese Engineering Company of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan in Wau has completed more than 170 kilometres of robust road rehabilitation, linking the towns of Kuajok, Wau and Tonj.

The project, which began in November 2017, was completed earlier this month, making it possible for both cars and trucks to move smoothly and nimbly from Juba through Tonj to Wau and Kuajok.

The road repair is part of the peacekeeping mission’s contribution to facilitate movement of humanitarian convoys, and other traffic, within the Bahr-el-Ghazal region.

“I am very happy now that people of Tonj can travel from Tonj to Wau in just two hours. Before it used to take at least five hours,” said Simon Deng, a resident of Tonj.

‟I am glad that the road maintenance has made movement easy to my community. With the repair work completed, I am seeing many more vehicles coming into and out of Wau ” said Doreen Yar Yack, another resident of Tonj.

“It is a great pleasure to witness the opening of this important supply road, which was constructed by the Chinese Horizontal Military Engineering company of the UN Mission. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on a good job. The local road transport will be enhanced greatly; which will further support the development of South Sudan in various aspects and create condition for the delivery of humanitarian assistance,” said Colonel Tesfay Haddish, acting UNMISS Sector West Commander, assuring the public of the continuous support of UNMISS to build durable peace.
