UNMISS hands over renovated school to the community of Cueibet
On Wednesday 7 December the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) handed over the newly renovated secondary school in Cueibet, west of Rumbek. The renovation was done as a Quick Impact Project, to improve access to education in the region.
The only secondary school in the area is now destined to offer education to the citizens in Cueibet with surroundings. Before the renovation of that school, students had to travel to Rumbek and other places in search of secondary education. Due to insecurity this was not always possible, which meant that many should-be students were missing out on vital schooling.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the UNMISS Head of Field Office Mr. Kwame Dwamena-Aboagye, expressed optimism for a better future for the beneficiaries of the school renovation project.
“This project is a sign of hope, a shining light for a brighter future for the citizens of the area. I urge you to utilize it and to take good care of it,” Mr. Dwamena-Aboagye stated.
The Director in the State Ministry of Education, Mr. Kolnyin Deng Deng, expressed his appreciation of the Mission’s support to education.
“On behalf of the government, I would like to sincerely thank UNMISS for renovating this historic school to benefit citizens of this state. This is a great achievement and we are happy to officially receive it from you (UNMISS),” Mr. Deng Deng said.
The Deputy Headmaster, Mr. Peter Dhel Machar, urged UNMISS and the government to continue their support to address some imminent challenges facing the school, including the lack of a fence, adequate furniture and sufficient funds to pay volunteer teachers.
