The UN Security Council delegation travelled to Wau in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal region on Sunday, to meet with Internally Displaced People and to see for themselves the prevailing humanitarian and security conditions.

The delegates toured a protection area established adjacent to the UNMISS base in Wau and also made a stopover at the catholic church compound in Wau town, which is providing shelter to  internally displaced persons.

“Many of you have suffered sexual violence, many of your family members have been killed and we have come as the UN Security Council to try to determine how we can strengthen the UN Mission in South Sudan,” Ambassador Power told the IDPs. She however assured them that the UN Security Council delegation is in the country to find out how they can push the government and other parties to implement the peace agreement.

Ambassador Power, also said that the United Nations Security council came to find out how to secure accountability for the horrible crimes, that have been committed here and around the country and reiterated the need for accountability for those who have committed rape, looting and killing.

She assured the IDPs in Wau that the Security Council is determined to do all it can so to try to ensure that once again the displaced persons live with security and dignity.

Ambassador Power commended the Catholic Church for opening its doors and its hearts to people facing desperate threat and reiterated that the UN Security council wants to try to make the UN in South Sudan stronger.

“We have seen the kind of conditions that the people are living in and we know that nobody would live like this, if they felt secure going home,” she said.

The Council has, in its recent Resolution, expressed grave alarm over the security situation and the ongoing violence in the country, as well as the dire humanitarian consequences for the people of the country.

The council has used the trip to South Sudan to urge all parties to adhere to an immediate end to fighting throughout the country.
