Warring parties sign implementation matrix

9 November 2014- The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Special Envoys for South Sudan today welcomed the agreement by the government and opposition of a detailed timetable to implement the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.

“Agreement of the timetable is a vital step to bring the war in South Sudan to an end,” said a statement issued by the organization.

The IGAD Special Envoys called on the parties to “swiftly and earnestly take all measures to implement the agreed timetable, without delay”.

In a statement issued yesterday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon applauded efforts by IGAD to end the conflict in South Sudan.

“The Secretary-General commends the strong stance adopted by the IGAD Heads of States on the conflict in South Sudan which is in the interest of the people of South Sudan,” said the statement.

It added that Mr. Ban was encouraged by the parties' intent to cease hostilities immediately and reach agreement on an inclusive power sharing agreement within 15 days.

The UN Chief hoped that warring parties will live up to their stated commitment to peace and meaningfully engage in dialogue in order to reach a comprehensive peace agreement that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
