Wau government assures UN Special Representative of unhindered movement and humanitarian access

David Shearer, new head of UNMISS, today visited Wau and its UNMISS Protection of Civilians site as part of his first countrywide tour since taking office on 20 January.  During talks with the Wau Governor, Brigadier General Andrea Mayat Acho, and the top SPLA commander in the area, Mr. Shearer was assured of unhindered movement and humanitarian access across the state.

“Both the governor and the general said to me quite clearly that these people outside of Wau, even if they are in the rebel areas as they call it, they are South Sudanese and they deserve to get the same support as everybody else in form of food, medical supplies etc.”, Mr. Shearer told Radio Miraya.

The UNMISS chief said that “some common ground to work on” was found. In the audio file below, Mr. Shearer explains the details.
