Police Commissioner visits Bor

11 December 2014 - UNMISS Police Commissioner Fred Yiga today commended the protection of civilians (POC) site in Bor, Jonglei State, for its level of development and commitment to peaceful co-existence.

“I have been to the PoC Site in Bentiu, Malakal, and I know how it is in Juba. This here in Bor is the best PoC,” Mr. Yiga said to community leaders at the site.

But he stressed that “no condition is permanent”, and urged community leaders to encourage displaced people to hope for a better future.

The Commissioner was winding up a visit to capitals in the three conflict states of Upper Nile (Malakal), Unity (Bentiu) and Jonglei to consolidate contingency plans as 15 December, the first anniversary of the conflict, drew near.

POC community leader Rev. William Tut thanked UNMISS and UNPOL for their professionalism in administering the site, setting up conflict mitigation measures and cooperating with the IDP committee. “UN Police are doing a good job and working well with our people.”

Speaking also about the UNMISS mandate, the Police Commissioner said UNPOL was ready and prepared to protect civilians. He urged all to pray that the people meeting for talks in Addis would reach a logical compromise for lasting peace.

Mr. Yiga was also briefed by the senior Indian battalion officers on security and defense measures in place at the new POC site, compared to those at the old one, which witnessed an attack in April.

The Commissioner also met with UNMISS Jonglei State Coordinator Hazel De Wet for an update on the situation in Jonglei State.
