UNMISS puts out Rumbek fire

31 March 2013 – A fire broke out in Rumbek Market today, destroying property worth an estimated 200,000 Sudanese pounds before UNMISS brought it under control.

The cause of the blaze is still unclear, although witnesses told UN Radio Miraya it had begun at a market welding site.

When the Fire Brigade was unable to respond due to mechanical problems with its truck, Deputy Governor Mabor Achol Kuer appealed to UNMISS.

"UNMISS ... responded positively by releasing immediately two trucks to come and quench the fire in the market," Mr. Kuer said.
