UNMISS sensitizes chiefs in Rumbek East to uphold and promote human rights

The UNMISS Human Rights Division alongside other substantive sections engaged 35 traditional leaders on their role to respect, uphold, and promote human rights in the community.

While there, the County Executive Director Mr. Madit Malual urged chiefs to discard the misconception that human rights have brought disorder and confusion in the country.

“This is a right forum for you (chiefs) the custodians of law to correct the misconception that human rights are not good. It is because we were denied our rights; that was why we fought successive Khartoum regimes.”

Meanwhile Human Rights Officer Mr. John Oziekbe encouraged participants to be advocates for human rights in their communities.

“I am encouraging you dear chiefs to be advocates for human rights in your communities. Maximize the knowledge you gained here today for the benefit of all.”

This engagement was carried out in Aduel, the Headquarters of Rumbek East County.
