An integrated patrol unit of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan – UNMISS has concluded a three -  day long duration patrol to Mapuordit, located approximately 76 km from Rumbek, the provincial capital of Lakes in Southern Sudan.

Long duration patrols carried out by the mission are designed to provide an opportunity to assess the security situation and humanitarian conditions and also to monitor human rights and liaise with local authorities to understand changing aspects on the ground.

The mission’s outreach team used the opportunity to sensitize the students at Mapuordit School, about the mission’s mandate, conflict management and human rights promotion.

Mr. Solomon Dut, a Students’ representative said he was happy with the information about the UNMISS mandate.  “I appreciate UNMISS for coming to interact with us for the first time. On behalf of my fellow students, we will share what we learnt today with those who didn’t attend,” said Dut.

Mr. Daniel Marial Makuac, the principal of Mapuordit School, said education in the area is being constrained by lack of accommodation and appealed for the mission’s intervention to support the construction of accommodation facilities for the students.

“I am humbly requesting UNMISS to engage any of the NGOs to come to Mapuordit to construct dormitory for students who stay far away from the school,” said Marial.
