World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day, celebrated on 20 June, honours the courage and determination of men, women and children forced to flee their homelands under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. The theme this year is "One family torn apart by war is too many". According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are an estimated 223,754 refugees in South Sudan, of which more than 85 per cent are from Sudan (June 2013). The population in Yida, the country's largest refugee camp in Unity State, increased five-fold to nearly 75,000 from March 2012 to May 2013. Photo: UNMISS/Martine Perret. Click for larger image.
